10 Sessions to Catch at GSX 2023 (and Other Great Events to Attend)

Come for the networking, stay for the education… or is it the other way around? Either way, heading to GSX 2023 in Dallas is the best opportunity to experience a little of both.

Traditionally, the show has focused more on ensuring the best possible forum for sharing trends, challenges, and ways forward for the security industry. This year is no exception, as many of the sessions that caught my attention highlight security practitioners sharing best practices and experiences navigating the ever-changing nature of the business.

Here are the sessions that you should add to your list:

Fact vs. Fiction: The Truth About Leveraging AI to Enhance Security

Tuesday, Sept. 12 @ 1:30 p.m.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of those buzz phrases that we’re not going away from anytime soon, and it’s so important to parse the truth from what might be considered a marketing ploy. Looking forward to seeing this on the X Stage in the Expo Hall.

Mapping Security Back to the Business

Tuesday, Sept. 12 @ 3:15 p.m.

OK, OK…I know that this features someone from HiveWatch, but we’ve seen time and time again the hoops that physical security leaders have to jump through to get budget approved for new investments. So being able to map these investments back to the overall goals of the business is crucial. Plus, it features speakers from Barco, Moderna, and Meta. This one is a can’t-miss.

Benefits of a Diverse Workforce

Monday, Sept. 11 @ 11:15 a.m.

As HiveWatch has been very intentional about setting a foundation of diversity-focused hiring, much of the rest of the security industry has been slow to adopt these practices. This session is an important one to shed light on the advantages this presents when working on security protocols, fighting against “group think,” and establishing clear-cut guidelines for organizations.

What Will Corporate Security Look Like in 2033?

Tuesday, Sept. 12 @ 3:15 p.m.

I’m all for a session about looking at the future of security, and this one features insights from Meta and Paper Excellence Group. Covering topics such as biometric security, cybersecurity focus areas, the use of autonomous drones and robots, what AI means, and more, this session is not one I will miss.

Equipping the Global Security Operations Center of the Future

Monday, Sept. 11 @ 11:15 a.m.

We’re in the business of GSOCs and like I said before, future-looking sessions allow us to see what’s coming and address challenges before they become real problems. This session will expand on the role of the GSOC for the overall business, how technology is changing it, and ways security pros can be better about not losing sight of how operators, well, operate.

LGBTQ+ Safety in the Modern Industrial Democracies

Tuesday, Sept. 12 @ 10:30 a.m.

How do security managers ensure the safety of their employees in an increasingly polarized and uncertain environment? How far does an organization’s Duty of Care extend? Important questions as security leaders manage more diverse teams and companies prioritize safety for all. Insights from International SOS, Capital One, and Meta will be a must-hear.

Upskilling Physical Security Teams as Part of the Digital Transformation

Tuesday, Sept. 12 @ 7:30 a.m.

This session got my attention because it focuses on moving away from analog systems and empowering people to better understand the technology advancements we’re seeing in security today. It focuses on developing digital literacy at each level of the workforce to increase base competencies for greater impact and likelihood of success for analysts, operators, and more.

Convergence of Physical and Cyber Identity for a Seamless Workplace Experience

Monday, Sept. 11 @ 12:30 p.m.

We talk about the fusion of physical and cybersecurity initiatives across global organizations, but zeroing in on identity is critical. I’m interested to learn more about navigating this in the real-world, with those users who might struggle with new ways of accessing critical information for their jobs.

Securing Our Future: An Open Discussion of Security in the Data Center World

Tuesday, Sept. 12 @ 11:45 a.m.

The data center security world is new to some, and an enigma to others with unique opportunities and thought-provoking challenges to secure. I’m interested in learning more about the unique problems security practitioners face when it comes to protecting these critical pieces of the technology puzzle.

The Metaverse II: Digital Assets, NFTs, and Industry Shake-ups

Tuesday, Sept. 12 @ 11:45 a.m.

Ready to hear more about cutting-edge use cases for new technologies in security? Look no further than this session, presented by Jon Harris, Lee Oughton, and Mary Gamble, which will examine how the industry is responding to these new and undefined areas of risk.

And here are other events to check out while you’re there:

Friends of Chuck Texas Night: Sunday, Sept. 10 @ 6 p.m. – Gilley's Dallas. (Free to GSX attendees).

Canada Night: Sunday, Sept. 10 @ 6 p.m. – Punch Bowl Social (Free to GSX attendees).

Women in Security + NextGen Happy Hour: Monday, Sept. 11 @ 4:30-6 p.m. – Omni Dallas, Texas Spice Restaurant (register by Sept. 1).

SOCs, NOCs, and GSOCs Meet Up: Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 2-4 p.m. – Bank of America Building, 53rd Floor. Shuttles are available from the GSX show floor.
